"Machikui Ballad"
written and directed by Shuji Fukuda
from Nagasaki
Founded
in 1997. Based in Nagasaki City, director/playwright
Shuji Fukuda heads a group of actors and staff in
their 20s and 30s. Each of the company’s productions
takes a different view on “the Nagasaki of
today” and originates from sentiments of the
people who live there. When the company participated
in the reading performance division of the regional
theater series in the Tokyo International Arts Festival
2007, the company invited Oriza Hirata from Seinendan
as playwright advisor and performed “Number
13 Lon St.”. The company performs on a regular
basis in their hometown, and has worked to create
environments that allow theater to be more accessible.
Both a bombed city, Nagasaki and a naval base town,
Sasebo are motifs of “Machikui Ballad (town-eater)”.
This is collaboration with SandyTrip, a music unit
based in Sasebo. SandyTrip performs nationwide.
